There appear to be multiple conflicting accounts on this one so I'd wait for an investigation.
So far I've read that the passengers were escorted out of the helicopter to the terminal and he then left the terminal and went back to the tail, that the doors were opened for the passengers and he got out and headed to the tail on his own and then at the time he either didn't have his phone and was was going to fetch it, he had his phone to his ear, or that his phone was in his hand.
