They dispersed corn in front of the trap to lure the hogs, upon approaching, triggering the device.
 
It is well known that the real trap for wild pigs/boars is a stack of apples that have been soaked in cider.
 
Poachers here usually operates at night (occasionally in summer I hear Gun shots in the neighboring forest and no, that’s not fireworks) and gives actual law abiding hunters a terrible name.

Also wild boars are plentiful in Europe, especially since hunting has been heavily criticized by greens, so it’s not like anyone need to trap them. Get a hunting license, might be steep but poaching is a serious felony.
 
They soon get to pest numbers. Several in a liter and able to breed a couple of times a year. During WW2 when many fellas were away overseas. The piggies had the place to themselves with numbers that would plow up an entire paddock, destroy farms. Some the size of small cows.
