The Spanish Navy Fletcher-class destroyer Almirante Valdés (D-23) is seen in dry dock undergoing repairs. The vessel was formerly the United States Navy destroyer USS Converse (DD-509) before being transferred to Spain and serving in the Spanish Navy (Armada Española).

The repairs were undertaken after Almirante Valdés sustained bow damage from striking the western pier at the Port of Palma de Mallorca. The incident damaged the forward section of the hull, necessitating inspection and repairs at the shipyard before the ship could return to service.

BRP Sierra Madre is a former tank landing ship of the United States Navy, USS Harnett County (LST-821). The ship was built during World War II and began its service in 1944. After serving in the US Navy, the ship was transferred to the Philippines and renamed BRP Sierra Madre.

In 1999, the Philippines deliberately placed and grounded the BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal), part of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. The ship, which was no longer operational as an active warship, was then turned into a military outpost and occupied by personnel from the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Marine Corps. The crew is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to maintain the presence of the Philippines around the shoal.

Since then, the increasingly old and damaged condition of BRP Sierra Madre has become both a symbol and an important part of the Philippines-China maritime dispute in the South China Sea. The presence of the ship allows the Philippines to maintain a physical presence at Ayungin Shoal, while Chinese vessels periodically operate in the area. Therefore, the BRP Sierra Madre is not just an old shipwreck, but has become a symbol of the Philippines' claim and presence in the disputed area.

Coast Guard

Indian Coast Guard and the Vietnam Coast Guard successfully concluded the 2nd Edition of Joint Sea Exercise SAHYOGHOPTAC. Conducted off the Chennai coast, 08 ICG Ships and 6 Aircraft, along with VCG Ship CSB8002, undertook joint maritime exercises aimed at enhancing interoperability, coordination and operational familiarity. The successful engagement underscored the enduring friendship and shared commitment of the ICG and VCG towards stronger India-Vietnam Maritime Cooperation and Maritime Security in the region.
