This might and probably already has been covered in the broader Covid-19 thread, however worthy of reporting in a new thread, Viktor Orban has tightened his grip on Hungary, while the EU essentially is, as often, worthless and gutless.

On Monday, Hungary’s Parliamentgranted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán the sweeping emergency powers he had asked for. Under the justification of the coronavirus epidemic, Orbán can suspend existing laws and rule by decree for an indefinite period.

No by-elections can be held while the emergency powers remain in place. Anyone the government views as spreading “falsehoods” or “distorted truths” that obstruct efforts to protect the public from the pandemic can be jailed for up to five years. In theory, Parliament could overturn the law with a two-thirds vote. In practice, Orbán’s Fidesz partydominates the body, and will probably allow Orbán to rule by fiat as long as he wants to.

Pffft We have invoked the health act, usually best used to send the non conformist to the asylum indefinitely instead of prison for a paltry 5 years, the country is officially run by a puppet.
NZ best police state.

This will happen to different degrees everywhere, I'm afraid. But Hungary certainly makes an attractive target for criticism to distract us from similar authoritarian developments at home. Hungary, the new Russia.

Precisely what I am fearing as well. Chain by chain and little by little, we are being forced to seclusion, all over the world. My tinfoil hat is off at the moment but « Democracy » surely is lacking these days, virus or not.

Will write more about this later...
