Dutch scoped FAL (GLA) in Afghanistan, 2000's
The FAL was the standard issue battle rifle of the Dutch armed forces from 1961-1995, in 1995 with the adoption of the Diemaco family of weapons, the FAL was getting replaced with newer 5.56 rifles (during the wars in Yugoslavia). The FAL stayed in service with the national reserve (NATRES, Dutch National Guard) untill 1997.
The GLA (Geweer Lange Afstand, rifle long distance) was a scope FAL which was in service as a designated marksman rifle, fitted with a KRR 62 optical sight (there is seperate post on it on this page). This FAL variant also got replaced but with the Accuracy International AWM.
From 2002-2021, Dutch forces were deployed to Afghanistan, and like most militaries, it lacked a 7.62 marksman rifle. The U.S. military fixed this by pulling out the M14, Germans the G3 and the Dutch decided to take the same idea and pulled out the GLA's to fit the Marksman rolls. The GLA was in use untill 2010.
