Here a first hand account of farm burning by a private Tucker from his diary put in book form “Private Tucker’s Boer War Diary” 1980 ISBN 0-241-10272-3
13 October 1900
“There were several small farms situated around and General Clery gave the order for all of the houses to be destroyed.
My company was given the job of burning several farms to the left and we moved off at once. Arriving at the farms, the women and children were ordered out and after every man had taken any article he thought fit, the furniture was broken up and the houses and all the goods were set on fire. Some men were busy killing fowls, ducks, geese and pigs and getting anything that was useful. It was good sport, but hard for the women and children. After all had been destroyed we returned to the remainder of the Battalion and shared all the loot equally among the company.
In addition to the twenty head of poultry, we also drove seventy head of cattle and horses back to camp. This was the best day’s sport we had, but our blankets didn’t arrive until about 1:00 am as all our luggage had been kept well in the rear.”

Translation: "My Sarie Marais/ is so far from my heart/ but I hope to see her again/ she lived in the area of the Beautiful River/ before the war began. Oh, bring me back to the old Transvaal/ to where my Sarie lives/ there under the corn next to the thorn tree/ there lives my Sarie Marais. I was so afraid/ that the Brits would capture me/ and send me far away across the sea/ then I fled to the side/ of the Upington sand/ there along the Great River. Salvation came/ and it was time to go home/ back to the old Transvaal./ My beloved/ shall surely be there too/ to reward me with a kiss.
