In the South Africa of old, all high school attending white males (13 to 18 year olds) had to take Youth Preparedness (YP) lessons, once a week.
Junior NCO Rank was earned and leadership taught, with almost everybody learning to drill a platoon.
On this day, normally a Thursday, we all came to school in nutria miltary shorts, shirts and berets and basically spent a couple of hours drilling and being cadets.
It was also compulsory to attend the annual 'Veldt School' (Bush School) when you were 16 - which was spent being treated like a military recruit - drilling, fieldcraft, orienteering and team building - for 7 days non stop.
Digging out old memories now and showing my age!
