Politics All Things Trump

Have no particular idea what's going on with that aircraft but it's just a weird look for the President and his administration. Even talking about accepting a huge gift from Qatar just a matter of weeks after the President's company agreed to build a golf course there with all the necessary investment? And the attorney general said it's all above board but she was previously a paid lobbyist for Qatar?

It just looks bad.

Yeah, it's a little funny, I suppose. But they didn't say they are giving to Donald J. Trump, they said they's give it to the US Military.

I´m pretty sure Boeing would not be late if it was just about delivering a 747 with a toilet seat made of gold. This plane must be ultra luxurious, but it probably lacks a lot of the special features of the VC 25´s

I read that the first one was delivered in 1990...I had the illusion that Reagan flew on it.

Boeing promised delivery by '24. That has been pushed back to '27-'28-ish.

Are not all military programs? I heard the helicopter used for transfer from the White House is´nt that new either.

I'm not really sure that this one would be in service any faster than 2027 - it'll likely require a D check which is taking it apart to the last nut and bolt, everything checked and then reassembling with the equipment deemed necessary to fly the President around on after any structural changes have been made to fit in said gear... Secure comms, medical gear, hardened against EMP and all needs to be carried out by a work force that have passed whatever security checks are deemed necessary to work on a aircraft that will be used by the President - I don't imagine there are hundreds of those guys just hanging around. It doesn't sound like any quick kind of job.

Yes, I've read that it would be rebuilt with military contractors other than Boeing. I suspect it may be used as a wake up call to Boeing.

The rules for the U.K. royal flight, was to cut every time based maintenance period in half. So if a filter needed changing every 100 hours, they would change it at 50 hours. So if usaf apply the same rule, that jet could need a heap of work. Totally separate issues about security, safety etc. if you knew a plane or a car was going to be used by a vip, you could secrete a bomb or spyware. Triggering it, or accessing the data could be hard, but that’s spying as a business.

The jet would be transferred to his presidential library after his term.

Where will they fit all the books? Or is it a flying library?

That's what the media is reporting, but no one else in the know, like Qatar, USAF or Trump. And if so, why would they do that, and not one of the existing AF1s which would be retired by then?

Doesn't the Air Force have something in the 4-engine class that has low enough numbers on its airframe that could be transferred over? I mean, really....... Expedient conversion.... Some secret squirrel 747, some KC-10 with low miles..... a rebuilt 707/C-135

Or still in the private sector .... A customized 777 business jet..... This whole thing seems really stupid and drawn out.

I have doubts that the President's ego would allow that. Admittedly, the Qatari aircraft will be second-hand but I suspect it's description of being a "flying palace" is enough to offset that in his mind.

We still have several Concordes, give us a few weeks, and they are fast…..FAST…..

I believe for various reasons they want to stick with a 747. Apparently there are no lower hours aircraft in the inventory. I also believe the 2 747s that Boeing has been converting for the past 7 years were originally ordered by a Russian airline, but never delivered.

I think a c17 would be cool. The beast could ride along.

Several C17s do come along. But the speed and size of a 747 are perfect. Most people don't realize that a 747 can fly at near Mach 1, maybe more for AF1.

Current AF1 was built in 1986. New AF1 is expected in '29. Qatar 747 built in 2012 and has 2000 flight hours. Last new built 747 was in '23.
