I wouldn't be surprised if the SIG Sauer version is chosen, along with it's ammo.
Latest configuration.
In February, SIG SAUER was proud to announce the final delivery of the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) systems to the U.S. Army, consisting of the revolutionary 6.8x51 hybrid ammunition, the NGSW-AR lightweight belt-fed machine gun, the NGSW-R rifle, and suppressors.
If it is actually ever fielded it won't take long before a civilian version hits the market and other manufacturers start making 6.8 and making conversion kits for it.
If it is actually ever fielded it won't take long before a civilian version hits the market and other manufacturers start making 6.5 and making conversion kits for it.
No doubt the 6.8 will matriculate throughout, eventually.
One reason the US Army/USMC will be converting from the 5.56 is, they are preparing to fight peer and near peer armies equipped with modern body armor.
