USN Ensign George Gay lone survivor of Torpedo sqd. 8 in hospital at Pearl Harbor after being rescued at the battle for Midway Island where he was shot down and from his vantage point in the sea watched the Jap carrier force, 4 in all destroyed at the battle for Midway.
This is a picture of a US Aircraft Carrier under attack from the Japanese along with the rest of her fleet at Midway.
It is very possible that this shot is the USS YORKTOWN CV-10 "The Fighting Lady" but I cannot confirm that. Maybe someone out there could clarify this for us?

Scene on board USS Yorktown (CV-5), shortly after she was hit by three Japanese bombs on 4 June 1942. Dense smoke is from fires in her uptakes, caused by a bomb that punctured them and knocked out her boilers.
