Reefer ship Asmara passing through the Canale Navigabile, Taranto, 1930s. During World War II, she served for a time as a "floating refrigerator" for the garrison of the Aegean island of Leros, and also served on occasion as an accommodation ship for the men of the Xa Flottiglia MAS, during the lead-up to the raid on Souda Bay and that of Alexandria.
She sank on 11 August 1943, a day after being torpedoed by HMS Unshaken; of the 157-strong crew, two died and twelve were wounded.
A reefer ship is a refrigerated cargo ship typically used to transport perishable cargo, which require temperature-controlled handling, such as fruits, meat, vegetables, dairy products, and similar items.

June 24, 1914, a Royal Navy squadron including the four King George V-class battleships, three of which are in this picture, visited Kiel to attend the re-opening of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal. A few days after on June 28, Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated.

Imperial Japan:
On May 7th, 1942, during the Battle of the Coral Sea, light aircraft carrier Shoho was sunk by carrier-based planes from USS Lexington and USS Yorktown. She was the first Japanese carrier to be sunk.
The North Carolina-class battleship USS Washington (BB+56). Designed in the 1930s with a Washington displacement of 35,000 tons, she entered service in 1941 and in 1945 she displaced approximately 45,000 tons although she maintained her top speed of 28 knots and could act as an escort for aircraft carriers bristling with anti-aircraft artillery.

#OTD in 1945, U-858 was taken over by a U.S. Navy crew. The German captain had surrendered the sub at sea four days earlier and was then ordered to proceed to Fort Miles, Delaware. The transfer was watched over by a Sikorsky HNS-I, the first helicopter to enter U.S. military service.
