MADELEINE VICTORINE BAYARD. 1st Officer WRNS on HMS Fidelity formerly French Merchant Ship Le Rhin
Served as Madeline BARCLAY on the French merchant vessel Le Rhin. After the fall of France, in 1940, the ship escaped to Britain and was accepted for service with SOE, re-commissioned as HMS Fidelity, with its French crew inducted into the Royal Navy.
Daughter in 1911 of Adele Suzanne Bayard, father unknown of Santeny, France.

The following extract is taken from an entry of The Daily Mail dated Tuesday 16 February 1943.
Hull Wren killed by train.
WREN, Joan Huzzey with another WREN was waiting for the night train from Barry to Cardiff. It is assumed that they hurried out of the waiting room on the darkened platform (black-out in operation) and seeing a train at the down platform stepped forward and were killed by an incoming train. No one had seen them or heard screams and it was not until the next morning that the bodies were found. They were given a Naval funeral.

They were known to be catching the 10.45 pm train to Cardiff last night hurried through the waiting room on the platform on seeing a train and thinking it was for Cardiff and hurried towards it on the down platform and as they fell on to the four-foot way their train must have come in and struck them

On the evening of Monday 31 May 1943 a party of 18 personnel from HMS Blackcap were returning to base in a Royal Navy Lorry after being at a local dance. The lorry went off the road and overturned at Wrights Green, Appleton, near their base. Six were killed and others although injured survived

It became known that she had no family and as a result, personnel from the base and many local residents attended her funeral in such number that the church could not accommodate them and her funeral service had to be held at the local War Memorial. She was laid to rest with Full Military Honours at St Cross, Appleton Thorne.

Leading Wren Hare who had just returned from Christmas leave had been in Service nearly two years, previously being employed as a shorthand typist in Newcastle. A native of South Shields, she lived in Buenos Aires until the age of 15 when she became a pupil at Whitley and Monkseaton High School.

NORTH WREN killed.
Returning from leave on New year’s Eve Leading Wren Elnora Hare (19) daughter of Captain William Hare O.B.E. and Mre Hare of King’s Drive, Whitley Bay was involved in an accident with and army lorry and received injuries from which she died shortly afterwards in Winchester Hospital.
Two marines (brothers) beside Miss Hare were killed in the accident.
They were in a queue waiting for a bus near a camp when an American Army lorry appeared. Several persons were injured.
At the inquest at a naval camp in Hants, yesterday, the coroner said he understood that a charge was being preferred by the American Army authority against the driver James E. Womble of the lorry. The coroner adjourned the inquest.

At an American General Court Marshall in a Southern Hampshire town of Tuesday James E. Womble was acquitted of three charges of manslaughter.
The charges arose out of a road accident on New Year’s Eve when a service vehicle driven by the accused ran into a que of about 30 people who were waiting for a bus in the blackout.
