William Ewart WOODHOUSE. Private, Signaller 24491, 1/5th South Staffordshire Regiment. Formerly

Boy Class 2 J.15705, Royal Navy. Enlisted 25 January 1912 on HMS Ganges II. Resided at Dudley, Staffordshire, occupation, baker’s assistance. Discharged from the navy by purchase on shore 6 April 1912. Ten pounds paid by his father of 33 Mace Street, Old Hill, Staffs.

Born 30 December 1894 to Albert William and Hannah Woodhouse, nee Perks. 1901 residing with his parents at 22 Holybush Street, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. 1911 with his parents and sister at 33 Mace Street, Old Hill, Staffordshire, occupation, baker and confectioner’s assistant. Husband of Alice Melinda Woodhouse, of 44, New Street, Quarry Bank, Staffs.

Killed in action 3 October 1918 in France. A war gratuity was granted to his widow 15 January 1919, revised 16 December 1919. At rest in Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery, Somme, France.

This poppy cross was at the Staffordshire Regiment Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire on the 11 November 2018
