William COURTNEY. Private 769901 Princess Patricia's 124 Canadian Light Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) Canadian. Born 15 May 1877 to William and Jane Courtney, nee Hoy at the town land of Ballymiscaw Belfast. Husband of Elizabeth Courtney. 1901 he was residing with his wife at 1 Eversleigh Street, Belfast. He and his wife emigrated to Canada about 1910. 7 January 1916 he joined the 124 Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force aged 38 years and 7 months. His civilian occupation was a teamster (drives teams of horses or bullock) In England called carter. He resided with his wife at 189, Rhodes Avenue, Toronto. Enlisted
After training he embarked with 124th Battalion for Halifax on the 7 August 1916 on S.S. Cameronia. Disembarked Liverpool, England, 18 August 1916. At some stage he was posted to Witley Camp, on Witley Common Surrey. This camp was for training British and Canadian soldiers before they were sent to France. 5 December 1916 he embarked for France. Whilst in France he was taken ill 25 May 1917 and admitted into No 14 General Hospital, Wimeruex, France. suffering from empyema. 13 June 1917 he was operated on, but his condition deteriorated. The 11 August 1917 he was invalided and posted to Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot Seaford on Hospital Ship, St Andrew. Admitted into Horton (City of London) War Hospital, Epsom, Surrey. He passed away at 3pm, 7 June 1918 age 41 of empyema and cardiac failure.
