1988 USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarriers, the biggest warships in the world and the mainstay of the United States of Americas naval power, the Abraham Lincoln is generally considered as part of a sub-class lead by the Theodore Roosevelt.
THE WORLDS BIGGEST WARSHIPS
Altogether, the US Navy at the end of the 20th century was to have nine nuclear-powered carriers, all of them save for the 40-year-old USS Enterprise being officially designated as Nimiiz-class ships. In fact, only the Nimitz (CYN 68), the Dwight D Eisenhower (CYN 69) and the Carl Vinson (CYN 70) were to be built to the original specification and the other ships of the class, starting with the Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), were to be better equipped and of considerably greater displacement though of the same general overall dimensions, much of the extra weight being devoted to better protection.
A LONG LIFE
USS Abraham Lincoln was built like all her sisters and near-sisters at Newport News Shipbuilding. She was laid down on 3 November 1984, launched on 13 February 1988 and commissioned on 11 November 1989.
