TET Offensive, 1968 at Soc Trang, RVN

A slide show of the 1968 Viet Cong attack of Soc Trang, RVN with "battle" audio.
Extended Description
The guy who taped the audio was actually making a small audio to send to his girlfriend or wife and the first rounds of TET 68 just happened to start falling in. He ran to the bunker and left the audio tape running, all the slides are over a few days and it got pretty hairy at Soc Trang, however Soc is the only airfield in South Vietnam that did not get a ground attack due to the special location and having a very large clear killing field on both sides of the airfield. Our Bn Hdq took some serious damage and also Ving Long where a sapper ran into the CP Bunker and detonated himself killing the Airfield commander along with others in the bunker.

Now Soc Trang only had 14 gunships between the two companies and a lot of those gunships were routed to places that were being over run so it left Soc Trang to defend itself with a lot less assets. Our T-Bird Chief received the DSC for his days in the cockpit without stopping but to only refuel and rearm. Downtown Soc Trang was under VC control and it was bombed by the air force and also on the final of our runway there were bomb strikes within a 16th of a mile to dislodge some mortar crews. The first 36 hours all the D models were on standby to evacuate from the airfield and get the personnel out. It took two days to finally get a complete intelligence report and understand what the US Forces were dealing with. In the end no matter what the news media in the US would want you to believe we killed so many VC from North to South they never recovered their numbers again. Even so they did do a redo of TET it was never as great or as large as the 68 attempt to take over major areas.

Our Commanding General was William C Westmoreland and he was the fall guy from the ass wipes in Washington who were the real criminals lying about the Gulf of Tonkin Attack by a tiny little North Vietnamese PT Boat. It never happened and was the basis for getting 50,000 plus Americans killed and a few hundred thousand wounded while fighting this new phrase never ever written in our war making policies or the constitution a "Police Action". It was all made up BS by that thief LBJ and his bunch of boot licke rs. Liberals are good at ignoring the constitution and our laws which could never be more clearer than today with this other liberal half wit we now have.

In ending my thoughts I just have to say that damned siren would just drive you mad, I would rather lose a big toe than listen to that loud whining shrill noise for hours. It was always after the fact and you don't need an incentive to find the bunker after a 75 recoiless round lands about 20 feet from your hootch on the company street. Laughing, but one night we got a few rounds in that year 68 that a person ran out the back door and into our bunker and someone had left one of those upright tall floor fans running facing the door in the dark, the guy lost a finger when he ran into it. Most of us learned to hit the floor and never ever run to the bunker.
