Royal Navy Patrol Boat

Royal Navy Patrol Boat

Still from my camcorder of some of the displays at the Faslane Fair on Sat. 4 June at Helensburgh. It's an annual event hosted by the Royal Navy, to raise funds for service charities. Pity it was such a grey day, with occasional heavy bursts of rain, but I think most people enjoyed it. This was one of 3 Royal Navy Patrol Boats taking part.

This is a University Royal Naval Unit (URNUs).
There are currently 14 URNUs supporting the countries' leading Universities in England, Wales and Scotland. The organisation's Mission is to "educate a wide spectrum of high calibre undergraduates who show potential as society's future leaders and opinion formers in order to better inform them of the need for and role of the Royal Navy, and to develop awareness of career opportunities in the Service." Each URNU is commanded by a RN Lieutenant who is responsible for 51 undergraduates who each join the URNU as RN Reservists for their 3 years at University. Training is conducted one evening a week in shore units at or near the University and at sea, over the weekends and during the vacations, by a dedicated Archer Class P2000 20 metre Patrol craft.
The 14 URNUs are located at the following Universities, and recruit from an area within 1 hours travelling on public transport:
  • Aberdeen, Glasgow & Strathclyde
  • Manchester & Salford, Northumbria
  • Liverpool, Yorkshire (based at Hull)
  • Birmingham, Wales (based at Cardiff)
  • Bristol, Oxford
  • London, Cambridge
  • Southampton, Sussex
This particular ship is named 'Biter'
there are two based in Brunswick dock in Liverpool ill see if i can get some photos of them.
Great info there, Bombardier, thanks. Just proves the point, if you want to know the answers, this is the place to be!! I checked my tape again and according to their numbers, the other 2 boats were:

P292 HMS Charger, Liverpool URNU
P167 HMS Exploit, Birmingham URNU

Also, the flagship for the day was HMS Westminster, a Type 23 Frigate. She was anchored quite a bit away, so my pics of her were not very clear either.
My brother served on the Uni boat based in Wales. Said it was a great swan and for a rating, a change to beast the "young gentlemen", correctly of course!
