Yes Bomber, Gene Hackmann played him very well, especially regarding his ability to see the flaws and other problems with the plan, which 'Boy' Browning and other staff officers just ignored. In my opinion, he was proven right in the end. Yet he was treated disgracefully after the failure of the operation and Browning was instrumental in having him removed from command.
He ended his days as a storeman in an electrical manufacturers and never seems to have been given the credit he was due.
Recently, the Dutch Government have officially recognised the efforts of him and his Brigade.
The Sosabowski Family have, for some time, been campaigning for him to receive the recognition that he truly deserves.

I have removed the link to the Sosabowski family website, it didn't seem to be working, but their web address is -

Gene Hackman played him very well indeed. But Richard Attenborough and William Goldman were also responsible for image Gen. Maj. Sosabowski in "A Bridge Too Far" movie.

More about Sosabowski also here: www.polandinexile.com/sosa.htm

There is also one unknown fact about dismissal Sosabowski from command.
It is Valburg conference which took place on 24th September 1944.
More about You can find here:

Then click on "Veterans Memories" and then choose "Jerzy H. Dyrda, 1st Polish Independant Parachute Brigade Group"
It is very interesting stuff not mentioned in any book about Market Garden operation.

Thanks for the links, Robson68, very interesting reading Lt. Dyrda's testimony. It strengthens the view that there was a conspiracy to blame the General and his Brigade, for the operation's failures, to cover up for others on the British side.
