Lt.-Cdr. Lionel Rupert Knyvet Tyrwhitt was born on 9 August 1903. He was the son of Major Hon. Rupert Tyrwhitt and Louise Isabel Frances Tyrwhitt (nee Wells). He married Kathleen Mary Pauline Kenna, daughter of Brig.-General Paul Aloysius Kenna VC and Angela Mary Kenna (nee Hibbert), on 11 September 1936. He was killed in action on 26 March 1942 at age 38.
He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy and fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches four times. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC). He was captain of the H.M.S. Jaguar.


Commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Commemorated on private headstone at

Cheltenham Cemetery Gloucestershire.
