Thomas INCE. Private 306218, 11th Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Born 1897 to Thomas and Annie Maria Ince, nee Jackson. 1901 with his parents and siblings at Swingalt, Kimberley. 1911 with his parents and siblings at 13, Babbington Lane, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Occupation aged 13 years pony driver, below ground at a colliery. Died of wounds 17 October 1917 aged 20 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 16 March 1918 revised 17 November 1919. At rest in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Albert JACKSON. Rifleman 43085, 1st Royal Irish Rifles. Formerly 41022 Sherwood Foresters. Born 1880 to George Henry and Emma Jackson, nee Marriott. 1901 with his parents at Victoria Street Kimberley. 1911 his parents were still residing at Victoria Road, Kimberly, he is not mentioned on the census for the house. 1911 he is boarding at the home of his brother William Henry and Elizabeth Jackson at 237 Whaley Thorns, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Cheshire, occupation, coal miner hewer, filler. At the time of his death his parents were residing at 17, Edgewood Road, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Died 14 October 1918 aged 38 years. Both his parents were granted a joint war gratuity on the 31 December 1919.

Albert LEDGER. Private 24708, 15th Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Born 1896 to Son of Samuel and Hannah Ledger, of Kimberley, Notts. Served 3 years and 3 months. Died 4 June 1918 aged 22 years.

Ernest LILLEY. Gunner 80963, 162nd Anti-Aircraft Section, Royal Garrison Artillery. Born 1896 to Enoch and Mary Ann Lilley. In 1911 residing with his parents and siblings at Colliery Swing Gate, Kimberey, occupation aged 15 years, colliery worker. Died at 1st Western General Hospital, Fazakerley, Liverpool 10 August 1916 aged 21 years. Son of Enoch and Mary Ann Lilley, of 40, Swingate, Kimberley. His father was granted a war gratuity 22 February 1917.

Percy Henry MEADS. Rifleman S/3513, 12th Rifle Brigade. Born 1893 to Sydney and Kate Meads nee Morley. 1901 and 1911 residing with his parents and sibling at The Alley, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Missing in action presumed killed 25 September 1915. His father was granted a war gratuity 8 November 1916 revised 11 March 1919. At rest in Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France
Notes from his army records -
Enlisted 8 September 1914 aged 21 years and 27 days, occupation collier. He was posted to the army reserve to await mobilization. On the 10th September 1915 he was posted to Winchester. After he had completed his training he embarked to France on the 21 July 1915. sixty-seven days later, on the 25 September 1915 he was presumed killed in action.

Bernard MOTTRAM, Private 62020, 16th Infantry Works Coy, King’s Liverpool regiment. Born 1888 to Abraham and Harriet Ann Mottram, nee Allcock of 16, Brown's Flat, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Died at Dingwall Seaforth Auxilliary Hospital 10 February 1917 aged 29 years. On the 8 June 1920 his mother and his uncle James Allcock were both granted a war gratuity.

Additional information. “Bernard” His correct name is Arthur Mottram born 1889 at Basford, Nottinghamshire. The census of 1891, 1901 and 1911 show Arthur as the son of the above and brother of John who also fell. The family trees on ancestry for the above-named parents also show Arthur and not Bernard.

Born 1892 at Kimberley, Nottinghamshire to Abraham and Harriet Ann Mottram, nee Allcock Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. 1901 with his parents and siblings at Kimberley. 1911 with his wife Mary Ann at High Street, Kimberley, occupation, working at the local colliery. Husband of Mary Ann Mottram, nee Meakin of 3, Hallsworth Yard, Cotmanhay, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Died 24 March 1916. His widow was granted a war gratuity 2 June 1916 revised 25 September 1919.

His father was granted a war gratuity 15 December 1917 revised 28 October 1919.

Killed in action 5 September 1918 aged 19 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 18 December 1918 revised 12 December 1919.

He joined up 24 April 1918 aged 19 years and 1 month. Resided at 13 Regent Street, Kimberley, occupation, coal miner. About the 13 August 1918 he was posted to the BEF in France, and marched into Infantry Base Depot to await deployment to his regiment. 19th August he was posted to the 10th Battalion in the field and on the 5 September 1918, he was killed in action.

John PEAKE. Sergeant 3139, 2nd Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) Born 1892 to Thomas and Betsy Peake, of (1911) Digby Street, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Killed in action 9 February 1917 aged 25 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 4 June 1917 revised 28 October 1919.

Born 1898 to George Lewis and Amelia Rogers, nee Ellis. 1911 residing with his parents at 20 Pole Street, Nottingham. At the time of his death his widowed mother was residing at 31, Jasmine Road, Old Basford, Nottingham and the late George Lewis Rogers. Died 13 March 1917 aged 19 years.

Occupation, bricklayer. His parents at the time of his death were residing at Regent Street Kimberley. Killed in action 10 August 1916 aged 24 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 29 November 1916. His brother Stanley was granted a war gratuity 26 September 1919.

Occupation aged 17 years, bricklayer. At the time of his death his parents were residing at 41 Newdigate Street. Killed in action 9 August 1915 aged 22 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 24 November 1915 revised 14 July 1919.

William Henry SHAW. (Croix de Guerre (France) Sergeant 24586, 117th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Born 1892 to Richard and Jane Shaw, of 41, Hardy Street, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Died 31 October 1917 aged 25 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 12 January 1918. His mother was granted a war gratuity 16 December 1919.

Herbert Samuel SMITH. Lance Corporal 2672, 1st Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) Born 1889 Lincoln to Walter and Elizabeth Ann Smith. 1891 with his parents at 30 Turner’s Building, Saxon Street, in the parish of St Nicholas, Lincoln. 1901 and 1911 with his parents at Starling Row, Kimberley. 1911 his occupation was coal miner hewer. On the 15 December 1916 his personal property was sent to his father at 2 Rutland Street, Kimberley.
Killed in action 11 August 1916. His father was granted a war gratuity 15 December 1916. His mother was granted a war gratuity 11 October 1919, revised 13 May 1920.

Notes from his army record - On the 11 May 1908 at Lincoln he joined Army Reserve (Special Reservists) as Private 2672 Sherwood Foresters. He attended his annual training at various locations. On the outbreak of the war he enlisted August 1914. Embarked for France 11 November 1914, promoted to Lance Corporal in the field 7 October 1915 and killed in action 11 August 1916. He had served 18 years and 94 days.

Henry STAPLETON. Driver T4/061907, 34th Reserve Park, Army Service Corps. Born 1880 to John and Mary Ann Stapleton, of 26, Knowle Lane, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Died from his injuries at No. 29 General Hospital, Salonika on the 24 June 1916 aged 36 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 30 September 1916, revised 20 August 1919.

Gordon William STIRLAND. Lance Corporal 40866, D Coy, 16th Manchester Regiment. Born 1894 to James and Louisa Stirland, of 1, Chalk Hill, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Died 7 August 1917 aged 23 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 2 March 1918 revised 6 November 1919.

At the time of his death his parents were residing at 20, Victoria Street, Kimberley, Nottingham and his wife Eva was at of 34, Addison Villas, Eastwood, Nottingham. He was killed in action 23 March 1918 aged 34 years. His widow was granted a war gratuity 17 July 1918 revised 9 September 1918 and again 5 December 1919.

Richard SURGAY. Private 23373, 2nd Grenadier Guards. Born 1892 at Basford, Nottinghamshire to John and Sarah Surgay, nee Hallam. 1891 his parents were residing at Knowles Lane, Kimberley. 1911 he was with wife Sarah Ann, nee Watkinson and their baby boy William at Kimberley Yard, Kimberley, occupation coal miner below ground. Killed in action 15 September 1916. His widow Sarah Ann was granted a war gratuity 8 March 1917 revised 23 September 1919. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

An army record was found for John Walter Surgay, serving in the Labour Corps as Pte 29777 from 1915 to 1917. Resided with his wife Mary at 8 Swingate, Kimberley. Born 1882 in Kimberley. 1891 census for the same person shows he was the son of John and Sarah Surgay.

Frank Williamson TAYLOR. Private 51737, 2/5th Lincolnshire Regiment. Born 1899 to Benjamin Williamson and Alice Taylor, nee Gerard. 1901 with his parents and sibling at Noel Street, Kimberley. 1911 with his parents and siblings at High Street, Kimberley. Died 15 April 1918. His father was granted a war gratuity 6 December 1919.

Henry James THURMAN. (CWGC list Henry) Private 8476, 2nd Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) Born 1882 at Carrington Nottinghamshire to Elizabeth Ann Thurman Nottinghamshire. Died 20 October 1914. 1901 he was with his stepfather Walter Wright and his mother at 49 Oldham Street, Nottingham. 1911 he was residing his wife Mabel Florence at 9 Bright Row, Nottingham. His widow was granted a war gratuity 21 June 1916, revised 5 November 1919.

He joined the Sherwood Foresters on the 20 October 1902 aged 19 years and 5 months as Private 8476. At the time of enlistment, he was serving with the 4th Sherwood Foresters Territorials. His was residing with his widowed mother who was his next of kin at 24 London Road, Sneiton, Nottinghamshire. His father was deceased for 2 years. Served in Singapore 1904. On the 31 January 1906 he was transferred to the Army Reserve
On the 24 January 1908 he was arrested by the civil police and held in custody until his trial on the 31 January 1908. He was tried by civil power and convicted of Felony (stealing 1/6 (one shilling and six pence) from a meter. (gas or electricity) He was sentenced to one-month hard labour, his sentence expired 29 February 1908. On the 2 April 1910 at the Registry Office, Nottingham he married spinster, Mabel Florence Biggs. He re-engaged into the same regiment 30 June 1914 and posted to the army reserved. On the 5 August 1914 he was mobilized at Derby. On the 20 October 1914 in France he was reported missing presumed killed at Lille.

Jesse Colin TOWLE. Sapper 146479, 130th Field Coy, Royal Engineers. Born 1889 at Kimberley to Jesse and Mary Towle, of 87, The Knowle, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Died in 6th Stationary Hospital, France 24 March 1918 aged 28 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 3 June 1918 revised 27 November 1919.

Private 24634, 15th Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) Born 1897 at Kimberley to Thomas and Sarah Ann Whittaker, nee Stirland. 1901 residing with his widowed mother Sarah A and siblings at The Alley, Kimberley and nephew of Mrs. Sarah Jane Stirland, nee Wright of 4, Truman Street, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. Died of wounds 14 October 1918. His aunt Sarah Jane Stirland was granted a war gratuity 26 March 1919, revised 7 May 1919.

Died 3 October 1918. His grandmother Sarah Whysall, nee Clarke, was granted a war gratuity 12 March 1919 revised 24 December 1919.

His father Isaac was granted a war gratuity 13 September 1916 revised 18 September 1919.

Killed 27 January 1945 aged 23 years whilst flying in either Oxford, R6188 or Oxford, V3320 of No 23 SFTS, which collided with each other near Heany. (source rafcommands.com).
