Joshua SINGLETON

Joshua SINGLETON. Leading Carpenters Crew 3544952 Royal Navy on H.M.S. Cressey.
Born 1877 to David and Eliza Jane Singleton, of Maze, Halftown, Hillsborough Co. Down Northern Ireland. Husband of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Singleton, nee Hewitt of Railway View, Culcavey, nr Hillsborough and later of Newport, Hillsborough, Co. Down.

Joined the Royal Navy 19 February 1903, civilian occupation, carpenter. He was posted to Royal Naval Shore Base, HMS Pembroke, Chatham and carpenter. He served on many ships last one being HMS Cressey which he joined 7 January 1914. He was promoted to Leading Carpenter Crew 1 August 1911.
Drowned when his ship was sunk German submarine U-9 in the North Sea 22 September 1914 aged 37 years. His widow Lizzie of Railway View, Culcavey nr Hillsborough, Ireland was informed of his death 3 October 1914.

Commemorated on a family grave in Eglantine Church of Ireland Cemetery County Down also on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
