John Michael HUGHES

Extended Description
Acting Sergeant (Air Quartermaster) 392522 John Michael HUGHES, Royal Air Force stationed at RAF Akrortiri, Cyprus. Born 6 March 1935, died 10 October 1961 aged 26 after surviving and horrific plane crash on the runway at RAF El Adem, Libya in which sixteen men of the 16th Malta Fortress Squadron (Construction Coy) Royal Engineers died. Some men died at the scene from burns, others died days later of their injuries. Sergeant Hughes, in true service personnel attitude, disregarding your own life, returned to the plane to try and save soldiers but he died in doing so. He is at rest in Dhekelia Military Cemetery, Cyprus.

Author - He is not mentioned in any story about this horrific plane crash, but to me he is an unsung hero who died helping others. Photograph discovered on line.

Wills and Admin, Ancestry - Royal Air Force, Nicosia, Cyprus died 10 October 1961 on the runway at El Adem, Libya. His effects went to Teresa Veronica Hughes.

Rest in Peace Sgt Hughes, you will never be forgotten.
