Lieutenant, G, Company 12th Australian Imperial Force. Born at Killerby, Catterick, Yorkshire
Died of wounds and buried at sea, April 28th 1915 aged 36. He was the son of John Bainbridge and Margaret Alice who in 1881 were living at Killerby Hall, Killerby, Yorkshire. In 1891 his mother was widowed and they were living at Merby, Syhan Road, Catterick. 1911 his mother and sister was living at 4, Wellington Square, Chelsea, London. He is commemorated on a Tablet in St Anne's Church, Catterick and also on the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey and Gallipoli. (The CWGC have his death as the 1st May 1915 which is correct)
Some notes from his army record. He qualified as a 2nd Lieutenant 1897, his civil employement was a farmer. He had served 15 years as captain with the Volunteer Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. His date of birth was 28th August 1879 and lived with his wife Margaret Caroline at The Cottage, Serpentine Road, Albany, New South Wales. He embarked from Freemantle on H.M.A.T. A7 Medic on the 2nd November 1914 for the Mediterranean. He was wounded in action near the Dardanelles on the 25th April 1915 and he died of his wounds at sea bound for Malta on Hospital Ship "Mashroba" on the 1st May 1915 and was buried at sea. He was Mentioned in Despatches. His widow then moved to South Africa where in 1920 she was living at 31, Yeo Street, Yeoville, and in 1922, to 97, Muller Street, both in Johannesburg. Their sons, John Calvert and Arthur Frank Calvert were both living at Capetown South Africa Both of their sons where to be killed in action with the RAF in World War 2.
