Extended Description
Colonel John Clancy, late 14th Prince of Wales’ Own Regiment.

Born in Dublin 16 March 1825.

Died a widower at Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast 27 July 1901 aged 76 years old of Fatty Heart for years, acute dilation of the heart for one and a half hours.

At rest in Belfast City Cemetery, Northern Ireland

He served with honour and distinction in the Crimean (including the assault of 18th June on the Redan) and New Zealand Wars, receiving the medal and clasp and Turkish Medal for the former and medal for the latter. He was several times mentioned in despatches and was awarded the Brevet of Major in the New Zealand War for conspicuous forwardness and gallantry in the attack on the enemy’s rifle pits at Kohevoa and during the action of Rangiriri.

He was connected with the Belfast Royal Victoria Hospital for nearly a quarter of a century, from his retirement from the army till the day of his death. His able superintendence and continued efforts, raised it to a high degree of usefulness and efficiency.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

Erected by his children with undying love.
