Hugh McCLURE. Rifleman 18231, 13th Royal Irish Rifles.
Born 1893 to Thomas and Margaret McClure nee Campbell of William Street Newtownards. Irish 1901 census with his parents and siblings at 3 Talbot Street Newtownards. Irish 1911 the family had moved to number 6, same street, occupation, cloth soaper. He died 22 October 1916 aged 23 years at his home from acute pulmonary tuberculosis. Occupation, labourer and army pensioner. His father was granted a war gratuity 18 September 1919. At rest in Movilla Cemetery Newtownards County Down, Northern Ireland.
Notes from his service records. Joined up 17 September 1914 aged 22 years and 7 months After basic training at Clandeboye Army Training Camp County Down . He embarked with his regiment to France the 3 October 1915. The 7 June 1916 he was posted to the depot at Taplow Yorkshire. He was on a Medical Board 10 July 1916 held at Taplow. Disability, Phthisis (Tuberculosis) caused by being wet, cold and exposure as the result of military service. His was medically discharged to pension as being no longer physically fit for war service to his home at 6 Talbot Street.
Awarded the War Badge, The 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal
