The cause of the sinking as follows.
The British cargo ship CHELDALE, built in 1925 by John Priestman & Co. Ltd. and owned by Morrison S. S. Co., on voyage from Colombo to Durban with a cargo of liquid latex, gunnies and rice, sank after a collision with GREYSTOKE CASTLE, 20.8 miles east of Durban. The CHELDALE sank in minutes and 16 people lost their lives.
