George SMILEY. Able Seaman 231456 Royal Navy on H.M.S. Black Prince.
Born 21 July 1888 to Samuel and Emily Smiley, of Belfast. 1901 he was his father and siblings at the home of his grandmother Martha Smiley at 100 Tennent Street, Belfast.
Married the 29 December 1910 Mable Minhinnick at St Matthews Church, Belfast City. His occupation was Able Seaman, Royal Navy. His residence was given as 46 Woodvale Road, Belfast. 1911 he was at sea his wife was residing with her parents and siblings at 1 Lanark Street, Belfast, later she moved to no’s 6.
Note from his Naval Record.
He joined up 21 July 1906 on HMS Caledonia. He served on many ships, last one being Black Prince from 26 July 1915 to his death 31 May 1916.
Died at sea in the battle of Jutland 31 May 1916 aged 27.
Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
