Alfred Kirke Ffrench was born in Meerut, India, on 25th February 1835, the son of Lt. Col. Thomas Ffrench of the 53rd Regiment. Educated privately, he entered the army by purchase in 1854 and was commissioned as Ensign in the 53rd of Foot (later Kings Shropshire Light Infantry) on 10th February, joining the regiment at Dagshai in India. Promoted to Lieutenant on 21st October 1855, he was advanced to Captain on 3rd September 1863. He won the V.C. 16th November 1857 in the Indian Mutiny. He was in command of the Grenadier Company at the taking of the Secundra Bagh. He was on of the first to enter the building and behaved with conspicuous gallantry.
This memorial is situated in the entrance to the centrall hall of St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury
