F164 John NEWIES. Able Seaman, C/JX127834, HMS Phoenicia. Born 27 February 1910 at New Monkland, Airdrie Lanarkshire. He enlisted 27 August 1926 on HMS Ganges as Boy 2nd Class, civilian occupation, messanger. On the 24 June 1938 he and many other Royal Navy personnel disembarked at Southampton from Durban, South Africa. His forward address was Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham, Kent. Died in Royal Naval Hospital Bighi, Malta 8th December 1947 aged 37 years of haematemesis (vomiting blood) following a peptic ulcer
