early M43

The M43 Stielhandgranate hand grenade replaced the M24 model in the middle of WWII. The M43 was easier to manufacture, and combined the explosive charge and fuse into a single self-contained unit. Because of this design, the grenade head could be removed from its wooden handle and used as a booby trap. The M43 used the same BZE 39 fuse assembly as the egg-shaped German Model M39 Eierhandgranate hand grenade. In use, the domed cap at the top of the grenade was unscrewed, and the coiled pull cord inside was yanked hard to activate the fuse before it was thrown. The fuse had a four-second delay. Like the earlier M24 grenade, it could be used as a fragmentation grenade by sliding a separate Splitterring fragmentation sleeve over the grenade’s main body.
