Paolo (Paul) BERNARD was born on 24th September 1841. He joined the Royal Malta Fencible Regiment as an Ensign on 17th September 1858 and promoted to Lieutenant on 25th January 1861 when the Regiment changed its title to Royal Malta Fencible Artillery. He was the Adjutant from 1st August 1868 until 9th November 1877. Further promotion to Captain took place on 5th September 1877, and Major on 10th November 1885. The Regiment changed its title again in 1889, and with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel he was the Commanding Officer of the Royal Malta Artillery from 17th February 1897 until he retired on 24th September 1901.
