By their very nature, all war memorials are tragic and sad places. Kundasang War Memorial must be one of the saddest of all, because it remembers 2,428 British and Australian troops who either died at Sandakan POW Camp or on the forced marches from Sandakan to Ranau in 1945. Only 6 Australian survived the marches by escaping along the way. These death marches are virtually unknown, so the men are sadly gone and almost forgotten. Thanks to a few volunteers, this memorial was constructed in 1962.
