Alexander George BAIN. Private PO/7542. Royal Marine Light Infantry on HMS Bayano
Born 18 February 1879 at Forton Gosport Hampshire to Alexander and Margaret Bain. 1881 with his parents at 17 Upper Mill Lane, Alverstoke, Hampshire.
Enlisted into the Royal Marines March 1895 at Edinburgh. Posted to the Royal Marine Depot at Portsmouth 17 March 1895 as Boy Soldier. Under aged for regular service from 17 March 1895 to 17 February 1897. Embarked HMS Volage, his first ship 25 May 1896. Served on other ships after that.
Husband of Priscilla Bain who he married 12 August 1903 and resided at 15 Bath Square Point, Portsmouth. 18 June 1908 he was invalided out of the navy to his home at 1*6 School Cottages, West Dean nr Chichester Sussex. No other record for him found for the war period.
At 05.15 on 11 March 1915, the ship was attacked and sunk by the German submarine SM U-27 about 10 nmi (12 mi; 19 km) west of Corsewall Lighthouse, Corsewall Point, Galloway, Scotland en route to Liverpool for coaling. The captain and 194 crew all perished, he was aged 36 years.
