It’s a bit of a flight from the Mexican gulf, would probably need to refuel over Tejas.
 
It was a training centre. I think by the time this picture was taken the Corsair was retired from USN service.
 
Yep, the topography and terrain of Kansas is pretty flat and dry, genuinely dunno if there are lakes or ponds there.
 
According to some who trained there during WW2 it was a vast sea of mud interspersed with duckboards.
