It is a driver-operated armoured vehicle, with a track-and-wheel mobility combination and a rotating flail.
The flail consists of a rotating drum with hardened chains attached to it. The chains
strike the ground as the drum rotates, detonating anti-personnel and anti-tank mines on contact.
The flail can be raised and lowered to accommodate rolling terrain, and can be set to penetrate the ground up to 0.5 m for deeply buried mines. The flail can also remove trip wires, scrub and sparsely grown trees up to 0.2 m in diameter.
The effective clearance width of one pass of the Aardvark flail is 2.5 m, as it must overlap each successive pass by 1 m for redundancy. As mines are detonated, they are recorded. Flail chains are checked for serviceability and replaced if required.
