Always had the sensation that deep inside Vinegar Joe just wanted to be another Primma Donna ala MacArthur. Too bad for him that the pacific theater of operations wasnt big enough to fit another ego the size of MacArthur´s.

My impression from reading the book above is a lot more positive about General Stillwell. He was operating under considerably more trying circumstances than Macarthur. He was also not a blowhard and managed to work well with others - not least the rather trying Lord Mountbatten.
