Like on the Mess: For all snippets of terrorism-related news that might not (presently) warrant a thread of it's own.

A 22 year old man from the Netherlands is no longer being prosecuted for planning a terrorist attack in Rotterdam. The investigation concluded that there was no actual plan to commit terrorism. The man was previously known for researching and documenting online terrorist activity and reporting them to the authorities. During an attempted infiltration he came into contact with a member of a Spanish intelligence agency.

A concert in Rotterdam was cancelled in August 2017 because of the possible threat. The man was arrested the same night.

Sri Lanka: Dozens killed, hundreds hurt in Easter bombings of churches, hotels
At least 42 people were killed and over 500 injured in apparent coordinated attack on sites throughout the country

At least 42 people were killed and over 500 were injured in a near-simultaneous attack on several churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, officials said.
The blasts hit three high-end hotels and one church in the capital, while two additional churches were targeted outside the capital, Colombo, during Easter services, Sri Lankan police said.

No one claiming responsibility yet

"It's still very open-ended … it's too early [to speculate who is behind the attack] but security in the capital and the airport has been stepped up following the attacksm" she added.

My thoughts are with the victims and their families, a terrible thing

Sri Lanka's police chief made a nationwide alert 10 days before Sunday's bomb attacks in the country that suicide bombers planned to hit "prominent churches", according to the warning seen by AFP news agency.

Police chief Pujuth Jayasundara sent an intelligence warning to top officers on April 11 setting out the threat.

"A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama'ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian high commission in Colombo," said the alert.

The NTJ is a Muslim group in Sri Lanka that came to notice last year when it was linked to the vandalisation of Buddhist statues.

Just heard on the BBC that there has been a seventh explosion and a number of police officers have been killed, sounds to me like a secondary device designed to do exactly what it did but not confirmed yet.
The BBC also states no group has accepted responsibility at this time

Looks like the 7th explosion was in a different hotel so not a secondary device. not clear if the victims of this explosion were cops
BBC state 9 foreigners killed and the suggestion is that the hotel bombs were targeted against them (seems obvious to me that)

Sri Lanka Bombings Live Updates: Police Warned That Churches Were Targets

As Christians in Sri Lanka gathered on Sunday morning to celebrate Easter Mass, powerful explosions ripped through three churches packed with worshipers, leaving hundreds of victims amid a havoc of splintered and blood-spattered pews.

In what the police said were coordinated terrorist attacks carried out on both sides of the country by a single group, suicide bombers also struck three hotels popular with tourists. At least 207 people were killed and 450 others injured, a police spokesman, Ruwan Gunasekera, said.

News of the bombings, the largest attack on South Asian Christians in recent memory, rippled out all Easter morning, interrupting celebrations across the world. Pope Francis, after celebrating Mass in St. Peter’s Square, said the attacks had “brought mourning and sorrow” on the most important of Christian holidays.

207 killed so far with 450 injured. Barbaric.

U.S., India Warned Sri Lanka Weeks Before Easter Terror Attacks

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka—Authorities here said an international terror group likely supported an obscure local Islamist group in carrying out a series of bombings that killed at least 310 people on Easter Sunday, weeks after the government had received warnings from the U.S. and India about a possible attack.

National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ), also known as National Thowheeth Jama’ath, hasn't claimed responsibility for the attacks - no group has as of Monday afternoon - but it has been blamed by Sri Lanka's government.

Who are the National Thowheed Jamath?, little is known about them

NTJ is a low level group that couldn't have done this cooordinated attack by itself
Know how and logistics were probably coming from abroad
I guess that the Sri Lanka gov is walking on eggs. it is easier to blame locals and go on a man hunt than admit that the island is a strainer.
Because if so, it would hurt the tourism sector more than it is already AND open the flank to pressure from neighbouring countries (like India)

Two people in Wisconsin have pleaded guilty to crimes related to providing support for the Islamic State, including a woman who used hacked Facebook accounts to share instructions for building explosives and mixing poison, the authorities said Monday.
