US-led forces have bombarded Najaf from the air as rebels and Iraqi religious officials prepare to continue talks.
Flames lit up the night sky after the repeated air strikes, which followed a day of relative calm amid the continued stand-off around the Imam Ali shrine.

Rebels led by radical Shia preacher Moqtada Sadr still hold the mosque, 17 days after a fragile ceasefire broke.

They are expected to resume talks with clerics to cede control of the shrine, one of Shia Islam's holiest sites.

  • Two French journalists were reported missing and concerns grew that an Italian reporter had been kidnapped after the body of his translator was found near Najaf.
