I recently found out that my father in law Gordon Whale (deceased) served with the Royal Engineers in the Canal Zone in the 1950's and that he had not been issued his General Service Medal before he died.

I obtained his medal which is now in my possession and his daughter (my wife) is very proud of it as she necer knew he had one.

I have discovered a web site that covers this period in Suez.

BRITAINS SMALL WARS

I have attached an image of the GSM (General Service Medal) for that conflict

Thanks mate
(belated response sorry):)

I know this is an old thread but I have been working my way through all the threads on the forum and this one interested me greatly. Well done on getting your father in law recognised mate, if only he had received it before he passed on.

My father had a similar story. He was in Germany 1946-1950 on 3.7" HAA and 17pdr AT batteries and then Malta, Palestine, Suez 1950-1953 on 25pdr batteries . He believed there was no decoration for his time and didn't want us to investigate. Myself and one of my brothers managed to get out of him his postings and dates etc and made our own inquiries. We applied on his behalf and he was issued his GSM with Canal Zone clasp. We had a little ceremony at my brother's place a couple of years ago.

My 2 brothers and I marched out in blazer and R.A.N. berets with medals. Called him out from his chair, put a beret on his head with his Royal Artillery badge on it and presented his medal to him and pinned it on him. He was absolutely chuffed!

He drags his GSM out of the display cabinet each ANZAC Day and pins it on "just to remember". If I can locate a pic I will post it here :)

Brilliant story mate I bet your dad looks really smart on Anzac day. My wife wears her dads medal on Remembrance day and is very proud of it.
