IDF tank corps used the Sherman tank since 1948 until the 80's
The American M-4 Sherman tank has seen battle with the IDF in four major conflicts, from 1948 to 1973, more than any other tank. It had also been modified and more sub-variants of it were produced more than any other tank in IDF service - from a main battle tank to engineer vehicle, self propelled gun and anti-radar missle launcher

The M4 Sherman along with the T-34 and Crusader are among a few WW2 tanks still in service around the world, even some developed nations.

India and Egypt I belive are still using imprived versions of the Crusader, some eastern European countries are using the T-32 and some African countries have all three. When I was last in Botswana I saw a few Shermans and T-32s driving around sometimes.

It's just a testament that even WW2 weapons and technology are still quite usefull even today.

Now this is crazy....

If you get the chance, check out a movie called "The Big Red One". They shot the whole thing in Isreal, with the IDF playing the germans. The irony of Jewish military, particulary IDF armored units playing the part of Nazi Panzers by using modified Shermans as TIGER 1's, is fricken hysterical!!!!laugh;laugh;laugh;

I have a friend who was a gunner on one of those Shermans. I believed he called them "Super Shermans", He was in a reserve tank unit near the Goland. He moved backed to the states just prior the Yom Kippur war.
